Design Principles - Week 4 - Harmony and Unity

Week 4 - Harmony, Unity and Proportion

This weeks lecture on harmony, unity and proportion, first we learn about harmony which is the sense that the selection of the elements are fit together. Unity is the principle that brings all these elements together. The arrangement of subjects shapes or elements and how they complement each other play a big role in achieving harmony and unity. Proportion is the relationship of two or more elements in a design and how they compare with one another. The effective use of proportion in design often results in harmony in unity. Basically saying that it can be conjoined in a way. Proportion is really important when it comes to design, example, space can be used to convey proportion. If you don't get proportion right, some elements may look out of place. The picture below I think is a great example of Harmony, Unity and Proportion.

Exercise
For this week's exercise, we have to create artworks, based on the principles, Unity and Harmony. using the medium, acrylic painting.

Harmony
Harmony usually stressed on the the similarities of separate but related parts. I was inspired by many artworks when i did my research for this principle. For example the use of shapes and color, size proportion etc. I can see that harmony can be interpreted in many different way.

Unity
Unity, in other words gives the artwork the sense of completeness. Unity is the principle that brings all the elements together. I have read in some articles that unity and harmony are the same thing, and others say that harmony in an artwork will only feel complete with unity. So i guess in a way both of these principles accord together.

Dr. Charles Feedback
Dr Charles mentioned that my paintings for Harmony and unity definitely represents the idea behind it and overall was successful with the artwork.

Reflection
In this weeks exercise i tried to use proportion in the painting for unity, as i tried to show different variations and  of the vases. Overall I enjoyed this weeks exercise. I hope i did a good job with emphasizing the principles in the paintings.
