Type Design and Communication
Week 8
For this task, we had to design our own typeface. We were given selected characters to design either uppercase or lowercase. The characters are, a b d e g i m o p t y ! , . We have to choose a reference typeface with in the given typefaces.
The first step of this task was doing our research on how typefaces are constructed a broken down. My idea for the typeface design was at first using Univers with all capital letters, I made some sketches for this but later figured that it wasn't very well attempted. Later on, I looked at more stylised typefaces. I found that the typefaces that I liked the most were Serif fonts, such as Bodoni Std, so I chose this as my reference for my typeface design.
Sketching :-
While I was doing my research I had already made some sketches in reference to Univers and also sketched from just from what came to my mind and inspiration. Then later, I changed my direction to Bodoni Std.
The first sketch is inspired by musical notes but toned down, but in my opinion it was poorly attempted and as the the next 2 attempts, they were inspired by gaming font designs.

Then the next thing I did was by using the same idea for the design, I applied that to my reference typeface, which was Univers LT Std, though I don't think that this was exactly the path I wanted to take. I digitised some of the letters just to see how it will turn out.
This last sketch is what I chose to digitise as my typeface design.
Week 9
Digitise :-
Digitise :-
This week, we got some feedback from Mr. Vinod, in where we can improve our design and giving us some direction, I had already attempted digitising my 2 design ideas.
I used Univers Lt Std as my main reference and made the shapes over the letters. This was my first attempt at digitizing the design.
My second attempt was the main design that I was going with, I showed Mr. Vinod this design and he gave me some feedback on the points that I needed to correct, though overall he said it was a good typeface.

The following is the first time after I made a few adjustments, though I think that there are a few more to go.

The next step was for me to make sure that the final digitised letters were ready to be imported to font-lab.
While copying the letter from illustrator, I had to make some adjustments on Font-lab.
Week 10
This week during class, we made our final changes to the letters and finished the final poster.

Lastly after exporting the typeface and installing it, we had to make a poster that said, "I am, a type god. Obey me!"

FEEDBACK
Week 8
Specific feedback: Independent learning week
General feedback: Independent learning week
Week 9
Specific Feedback: Mr Vinod mentioned that the stem stroke of the letter "b" should not be a flipped to the letter "d", moreover he said that the tail of the letter "e" does not need to be extended that much.
General Feedback: The letters should be digitised, consistency must be maintained, be careful to study references instead of following them.
Week 10
Specific Feedback: During the feedback, Mr Vinod told me to work on the letter, d, p, and b and also to make the comma and the exclamation mark bigger. For the poster he told me to make the point size bigger.

General Feedback: To make sure that by next week that your blog is complete. It should include, sketches, Illustrator generated digitised typeface in one art board, a screenshot of font-lab that shows the kerning of the letters and finally the poster.
REFLECTION
Experience
For the first phase of the task, it didn't feel quite as complicated to me. because thats usually what we do when beginning every other task as well. Though I think that since this was my first time making my own design, I had to make sure that I was looking at the right places. Along with Mr. Vinod's lecture videos, tutorial videos as well as feedbacks given by both of the lecturers helped me a-lot with the progress of my typeface.
Observations
Doing this task, each designed letter needed needed special attention. It doesn't work in a way, as if I am having an idea and trying to implement the idea to letters. There is a process to it. It was really important to me to understand what the lecturer is demonstrating to us during the class, as well as getting a clear feedback and making those changes to my design. The reason why I chose to go with my final design is because, during class, the lecturers mentioned that the simplest typefaces are the best typefaces. Therefore I felt that this design is a simple but also stylised to just the right amount.
Findings
I found that digitising a new type face design is a-lot more that you think it is, firstly when you're sketching out your idea you have to make sure that all the letters are aligned properly with in a format. And secondly after I digitised my design, I wish that I had double checked if I had to adjust any tweaks here and there. I made a few mistakes along the way and it took me way longer than it should've. Though in the end, doing this task, I have a newly found appreciation for typographers.

This article is especially was very useful for me for this task. Because it clearly explains the main type properties such as baseline, x- height, ascender and descender. Moreover, this also shows how type is classified. Foe example explanation of the different types of serifs. In addition to this, this website also shows how to maintain readability of a typeface as well.
