Digital Photography and Imaging - Exercises Week 1- Week 3

Week 1

This week, I was first given an introduction to Digital Photography and Imaging during the lecture for this Module. Mr. Fauzi gave us an outline on how the assignments are going to be conducted as well as the rest of the semester. Then he showed us a video on how to create collages and to prepare magazine cutouts for  week 2. For the exercise portion, we first played The Bézier Game that i personally enjoyed very much. Then we had to find our favorite graphic design works from Pinterest, upload and talk about what we like from the pieces.

The Bézier game is game designed to help you get started on and develop your use of the pen tool. At first I was a little bit confused but after about the second or third round I got the hang of it. I think that I can get a better score than this on my next try.

Exercise

For practical we had to list down my 3 favorite graphic works and give them a description.

This piece I believe, is meant to have some kind of representation for important matters. I  like how the lighting is reflected on the picture taken. Moreover, the colors used to draw the doodles gives this piece an extra lift.

In this piece, I like how they have combined the use of surrealism with a vintage picture that reminds me of the era of pop art.

I like how in this picture it feels like it has representation of something really deep. I like that its black and white and I feel like it takes really good skill with photoshop to create this kind of art.

Week 2

This week during the lecture we were introduced to composition. Mr. Fauzi talked about basic composition and everything that is important and to look out for while making or viewing a composition. had to show Mr Fauzi our cut outs for the 3 compositions we have to make. This includes explanations of rules of the third, golden ratio and compositions framing and cropping as well. For the exercise we had to show Mr. Fauzi the results of our 3 compositions and submit.

Exercise

Physical Collage

For week 1, we had to compile cutouts from magazines or newspapers to make a physical collage. We were told to make 3 different compilations to choose the best one out of the 3.

Feedback

After I showed Mr. Fauzi the 3 compositions I came up with, he gave me some feedback. He explained that the composition with the black background (Figure 2.2) made my composition stand out better and advised me to choose that one as my final composition.

Final Composition

I chose this composition because as Mr. Fauzi said, this turned out to be the most eye catching. My idea for this one was to do a composition based on the fashion industry.

Reflection

I feel that I learned a-lot from the first week as-well. I am really happy about the way that my collage turned out.

Week 3

This week during our lecture, we were taught the three most basic and also important tools in Adobe Photoshop. These tools include, pen tool, lasso tool and how to use layering. The pen tool and the lasso tool are quite similar, as the both of these tools have the same goal.Though, while the main point of the pen tool is that you can create shapes from anchor points, define lines and curves between the anchor points, the lasso tool allows you to manually draw /cut out the image in any shape you like. Then we learned about layering and how to layer. Basically, what i learned about layering is that it very useful while performing tasks like compositing multiple images, which is our assignment for this week. You can use layers to create special effects. Every new image has a single layer.

For week 3, we were asked to make a 3 digital compositions using the images provided to us by our lecturer. The following  are the compositions I could come up with.

Feedback

After turning in all 3 digital compositions, Mr Fauzi, advised that I should choose composition number one.

Final Composition

I feel that this composition had the best idea behind it when compared to the other two. 

Reflection

This week was a bit of a challenge for me, as this is the first time im using photoshop properly. It was a bit difficult at first but I think i got the hang of it eventually, as i was able to memorize all the shortcut keys that were important for this weeks task.
