Design Principles - Week 5 - Symbol, Imagery and Typography
Week 5 - Symbol, Imagery and Typography
This week on our lecture , First we were taught about symbols, which is basically, a sign, an object or a shape that represents something. There are 2 types of symbols, which are figurative and non- figurative symbols. Figurative symbols are then divided into 2 which are visuals and graphic symbols, which are the main kind that is talked about. There are 3 different kinds of graphic symbols. First is pictorial symbols where, the image is related and simplified, then there is abstract which does not relate to abstract art but are symbols that can look like they are represented but they have less detail. And lastly we have arbitrary symbols, which have no representation whatsoever to the object. The ideas for these symbols are invented or constructed. Most of these symbols are made from geometric shapes and colors. I feel that the idea behind this kind of symbols are of general knowledge. An example of this is road sign. Next we talked about Imagery where it is important that the right images are used to represent something. It can relate to a brand or concept. Lastly, we talk about typography, which uses its text to represent a composition. Type is not only used on the form of Roman alphabet but we can also use our own traditional alphabets as well.
Exercise
For this week, we had to use any digital art to make an art work for symbol. For image and typography we had to make a collage composition.
Symbol
A symbol is an image that represents something. I went through pinterest to find some ideas for this exercise.

My idea for the symbol is one that would be useful in the near future. Right now, it does not exist though someday I hope it does. The name of this symbol is call Air Charge. The use of this symbol is to show that your phone or any device that is connected to this, will show this icon which means that your phone is charging. If "Air Charge" has been set up in any room, it will charge your phone once you are connected. Kind of like bluetooth or wifi but for charging your batteries.

Imagery and Typography
I did some research on typography and collage together.

For this one I wanted to make the kind of collage where you take bits and pieces of paper, cut it up and then make a landscape. I really didn't have a sketch to go with this one as I already know what I wanted to do which is a sunset.

Reflection
I always wanted to do a collage like this. I'm very happy with the outcome of the collage. And for the symbol, I feel that the design definitely works for the idea behind it.
Nice Balance between the horizon sunrise and the sea. Good choice of colours. I notice a good equal weight but the sun is well emphasized! As for the text, I think you arranged it well! Its legible enough to be read. Purely manual collage & Good decisions here! Well done! Love it!
ReplyDeleteOverall, you have a good grasp of the visual principles.
