 Project 2B - Poster Design

Week 6

This week, we were first, given briefing about what needed to be done for this project. We have to make a poster that would benefit the society. A public service announcement. Our theme for this community project  is "Refugees in Malaysia". This week's task for the project is to basically do some research about the topic, write a summary, highlight the key points and give it a title, a slogan and call for action.

For the first part of the research we had to make a moodboard, basically choosing 3 posters for reference. I chose there 3 posters as I want to use the different elements from each poster and make it my own.

Above are the 3 poster references that I used on the assignment. Im posting this last one (figure 1.4) here because I really like that it represents the theme of the poster well.

The next part is to do research about the topic. When I did my research I found that, for this topic one of the most concerning facts was xenophobia, which is why I went with that topic in relation to covid-19 as well. Xenophobia is the dislike or prejudice against people from other countries.

I got all of my information from the following article-->
https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/seac/2020/10/08/the-impact-of-covid-19-on-refugees-and-asylum-seekers-in-malaysia/

I have yet to come up with a the details to any related information.

Feedback
Mr. Fauzi mentioned that I should a little bit more research before I finalize the title, slogan and call for action

Reflection
Doing the research for this topic I realized what a big problem the refugee crisis is, not just in Malaysia but around the whole world.

Week 7

On this week, first I made some changes to my research and changed the title slogan and call for action. For this week's part of the project, we had to define our concept, meaning we had to create sketches for each layer of the poster. This includes the Title, Slogan and call for action. Lastly, I compiled all the layers i sketched and put them together in mock-up posters to see how they look together.

Reflection
The separate layer sketches don't really look good separately. As for the mock up poster I just made this thinking about the placement only. I think after i digitize my idea, it will start coming together.

Week 8

On week 8 we have to draft the digital poster based our sketches. Develop the composition techniques using Digital Photography & Graphic Design. Apply color, typography, textures & effects Finalize your design with color correction.

The first attempt I made was using a color palette and the text, though this made it really difficult for me to decide how to present the picture in the poster.

Figure 1.13 -  Progress 1 - 18/05/2021

I went on the internet to get the pictures as I don't have any pictures relating to the topic that I took. I used this picture because it seemed appropriate for the topic.

I used this on a poster to see how it would look along with the text. This attempt was made without any changes.
Figure 1.15 -  Progress 2 - 18/05/2021

Relating to the sketches I found the perfect picture to use on my poster along with the other picture.

Next I  used the picture changed it to black and white and blended it with the rest of the layer using a gradient filter from the top.

Then i added the main picture and reduced the opacity to make the picture below pop, as I feel like it represents the lives of refugees more.

Then I started adding the text, placing them as I did in my sketches.

Feedback
When Mr.Fauzi gave me feedback for my poster, he said that I should refer to some of the fonts on the website he shared, so that the final poster will look more attractive. Better yet, to use a reference design.

Final Poster

Title:- 'Anyone can be arrested going out the door.'

Figure 1.21 - Final Poster - 18/05/2021

Description

For this poster I used pictures from the internet, specifically the people of Rohingya, as they are some of the most neglected groups of refugees in Malaysia. I wanted to make sure I emphasized on the words that relate to them to represent that this poster is to spread awareness.
I used the title  ‘Anyone can be arrested when going out the door.’ because although registered refugees and asylum seekers have been spared detention or released after their identities are verified, people who aren’t registered have little protection: immigration authorities have barred UNHCR from accessing detention centres since August 2019. Moreover the imposition of these security- centric approach since the MCO has lead to a high level of mistreatment and xenophobia towards the refugees.
Refugees don’t deserve to be treated this way. These are human beings who have fled their home country to find a safer place to live.

Reflection
I think that overall doing this project for the past 3 weeks, I have learned more, regarding  the importance of the subject matter as well as the point of the poster making. I really enjoyed making this poster, and I hope it visually represents the idea behind it.
