Design Principle - Week 3 - Repetition and Movement

Week 3 - Repetition, Movement, Hierarchy and Alignment

This weeks lecture was on repetition, movement. hierarchy and alignment. First our lecturer talked about repetition. Repetition is making a work of design look active. It creates a rhythm and pattern with in the work. A repeated pattern is creating the same elements throughout the design which creates movement. It can be even or uneven. Some examples used in repetition in a design can be colours, lines, shapes/ other elements etc, aligned in a similar pattern. Next was movement. It is the way in which a design leads the eye though a composition. Movement can happen when the elements in a design seem to be moving in a visual image. They come from kind of shapes, forms , lines etc. Use of space and how you arrange your elements is important if you want to convey a certain message. Then she talked about hierarchy in design which means directing the viewer's eyes first, to the most important element of the design then working its way around the secondary content. And lastly, alignment, which can be used to organize your design. A design without alignment can look cluttered.

Exercise
This week we have to create artworks based on the principles, repetition and movement. We have to use watercolour or pastels to create these designs.

Repetition
Repetition in design makes a work look active. I did some research on pinterest in order to get ideas for this principle.

Movement
Movement in a design is best shown is the way the elements are aligned. I was to create an art piece that gives off a message. I am always inspired when i go on pinterest.

Final Design Outcome

Repetition

For this design I wanted to use different colors and I used trace paper to create the repeated pattern that would give this final work a very precise pattern.

Movement

For movement,  I wanted to make it look like a wave crashing. I used different blues to give it more depth.

Dr. Charles Feedback
Dr. Charles mentioned that final work for repetition is pretty direct and successful, as it can still continue on without the framing. For the movement Dr. Charles said that if he had the option there won't be a framing the final work, he can see that there is movement because of the emphasized lines on the wave.

Reflection
I particularly enjoyed this week's exercise because painting is one of my favorite mediums to use while creating art. I am satisfied with the final result of my exercise, I hope my lecturer does too.
