Digital Photography and Imaging - Exercise - Week 7
Week 7
The lecture of this week was about color theory. Color theory explains how humans perceive color. It is the science and art of using color. RGB used in screens are created by mixing red, green and blue light sources in various intensities. CMYK used in print is created by subtraction of light. This includes Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. Next we talk about Hue, Shade, Tint and Tone. Hue denotes the objects color. Shade is a hue to which black has been added. Tint in a hue to which white has been added and lastly, Tone is a color to which black , white or grey has been added.
Color harmony is the arrangement of colors in the most attractive way. Then there is monochromatic, which basically means using one color hue in the design. Analogous are three colors located right next to each other on the color wheel, where usually one of 3 colors predominates. Complementary colors are opposites on the color wheel and produces high contrast in the design. Split complementary color is one where a primary color is used with the two analogous colors to its complement. Triadic colors are evenly spaced around the color wheel and usually give the design a contrast and harmonious look.
The psychology of color means that colors have the ability to bring out specific emotions for an individual. For example, white can represent clean, simplicity, innocent and honest.
Then, we compare warm colors with cool colors. Warm colors often evoke feeling of happiness, optimism and energy. Examples of warm colors are, red, orange and yellow. Whereas, cool colors can express calming, soothing and sometimes sadness. An example of a cool color is purple.
Lastly blacks and whites. Black adds sophistication, elegance mystery, confidence and boldness. Whereas white creates the feeling of cleanliness virtue and health.
Exercise
After the lecture we moved on to our exercise for the week which is project 2A, where we have to do recoloring on black and white pictures. We had to recolor 2 pictures. First (Exercise 1), where we had to recolor the picture already given to us with hair color and skin tone. And the second (Exercise 2) where we had to choose from the black and white pictures given to us and recolor them.

Something new I learned this week is to properly mask the elements separately and to change color hue to match the picture, to give it a more natural look.
Exercise 1
We had to use this black and white picture and colorize it. In the way that it is showed in Mr. Martins recorded lecture.

Next, I used the sample images to create colors for skin tone and hair.

Exercise 2
In this part we had to use everything we learned from week 6 exercise and this weeks exercise 1, and colorize the black and white picture of my choosing from the ones provided to us by our lecturers.
This is the image that I chose to color

Reflection
Despite what I learned last week, I think it was simply just a part of the colorization exercise, thought this week we dove more into the depth of making sure that the final outcome of the picture looks as natural as possible.
