Design Principles - Project 3 - Visual Analysis

 Project 3 - Visual Analysis

Visual analysis is the process of observing a piece of visual art whether it be, whether it be film, photography, painting etc, and dissecting by focusing on its elements and design principles. It is a description and explanation of its visual structure for its own sake. The purpose of visual analysis can recognise the choices that the designer made in creating the design. It also helps us understand how the formal properties of a design communicate ideas, content or meaning. Visual analysis helps people read and critically interpret images. Practising this sharpens critical judgement skills and helps people seek out answers. There are 3 phases in visual analysis. That is observation, analysis and interpretation.

Table of Contents
Observation: Its purpose is to identify the visual elements of the chosen design and describe what you observe in your own words without knowing the backstory before hand.
Analysis:  Requires you to think about the observation and try to make statements about the design based on your observation
Interpretation:This is the final phase where your observation, description and analysis are fused together with facts about the design from a trustworthy published sources.
My Interpretation:Which includes the progress and the process of the design.
Rationale:The last part of my post where I reflect on the final design and I explain my Project.

Project 3
For this project we need to visually analyse a piece of artwork of our choosing and describe it in 500 word and then produce an artwork inspired by the design we chose.

I started this project by doing my research first. Looking into different kinds of art. My main goal when choosing the art piece for this project was to use something that has a sort of value to it just by looking at it, whether it be cultural or social. And my preference was also choosing something from the field of fine arts. For my final design, I want to make an interpretation of it by doing the design, digitally. Saying that, there are many to choose from, especially from emerging female artists. I had to find something that would match my style and what it visually most appealing to me.

After many hours of scrolling through instagram and googling, I found some artworks from an artist called Lily Kemp that really resonated with me.

These are just some of the many artworks and it was hard to come to a conclusion on which one to choose. but after looking at them for a while I decided to go with the following artwork (Figure 1.2 - Lily Kemp)

Figure 1.2 - Lily Kemp - 09/07/2021

Observation:
By looking at this artwork I can see that there are many different subjects that represent the same thing though they serve different purposes. These subjects that clearly presented from different ethnicities are in different actions and are placed all over the painting in an intriguing yet powerful way. The attention to which your eyes are drawn isn't specifically one point, though my focus was brought to the middle of the painting first. The subject in the middle appears to be framed inside a vintage television frame and another sitting on top of it. Whereas, the bottom left subject is seen seen coming out of a hole and the next one in a walking action. Then on the bottom right in a seated position on the ground. One of the most appealing parts of this painting for me is the top right corner, where the two women are painting. I can see that this painting can speak volumes for feminism, as the main focus of the painting is the representation of powerful feminine subjects. For the background, what I observe is nature with the green bushes and the blue sky with the clouds. The colours that are primarily used includes different shades of blues and greens along with skin tone colours supported by hints of purple and pink. With every colour, I see that different shades are used which enhances the artwork. The artist's use of intricate details for the application of different shades bring the whole painting to life. It looks almost as if it was done digitally.

Analysis:
Firstly, I noticed that the design is asymmetrically balanced. Because of the way that the subjects are placed through out the painting that gives the overall design, stability. Even though all the subjects are aligned in a similar manner, I would say for me the main point of emphasis would be around the middle of the painting, first. I say this because, out of all the subjects this was the only one that was framed, and with the use of what appears to be a television which can also be a point of emphasis as it is contrasting to the other aspects of the painting. The use of this dynamic and harmonious colour scheme differentiates and defines a kind of texture like painting method, as well as lines and the shapes that accord the painting with structure that is pleasing to the eye. The way in which these women are given powerful appearances and the way they are intentionally paused, notably the woman at the middle, bottom, brings out the movement of the artwork. The artist clearly has a very distinctive way of painting. It shows the obviously different patterns and shapes that create the highlights and shadows (focusing that on the way their skin is painted.) Moreover, the use of feminine figures more than once is a way of showing repetition, as well as the manner or form in which they are presented, though they are shown in different proportions. The subjects at the top right corner of the painting are smaller compared to the rest. There is harmony and unity with the nature like background and the women, where I feel that all these elements come together very well in this piece giving it wholeness and it makes sense.

Interpretation:
This piece called My Reflection was made by Lily Kemp in 2019.  This painting is the representation of women in visual culture and within art history. She focuses on the representation from those of Black, Asian or other ethnic minorities. In this piece, she says that she is interested in the interaction between the women in her line of work and the space around them, to build the notion of them being in control of the environment they are in. "One woman is pulling back the edges of the painting to reveal another woman, the women at the back are painting the sky." In her work she gives the women the kind of power to own their environment. By doing this she is telling them that it is okay to be seen and to take-up space. Lily Kemp mainly takes inspiration from fashion photography or photography in general. She then creates collages from the photographs, which shows up in her work in the paintings. Her line of work particularly takes an interest in creating an alternative narrative towards women of colour and how women's bodies are portrayed. She hopes to portray the women in her paintings to be "expressive complex individuals occupying space in these fantastical landscapes". In the hopes that people who see her artwork also have their own way of depicting her work, she aspires that people who look at her artwork takes away something different.

My Interpretation:
In my interpretation of Lily Kemp as an artist and her work 'My Reflection,' I would like to emphasise the importance of women, particularly where I come from, and to represent my nation (Maldives) in the traditional sense. In my work, I'd like to portray our traditional attire and how we wear it. Especially I would like to weigh on what is called a Libaas in Dhivehi. The Libaas represents our most prominent traditional dress to this day.

The first step for me to figure out which medium to go with. Originally I was gonna make a painting, though I thought if painted this, it would be too similar to the artists idea, as I was going to represent women in my country with the use of her colour palette. Eventually, I settled on doing this digitally.

Next was doing some research on picking a background and finding pictures of women I'm traditional wear, which was pretty easy. After reading up on how the artists process with her pantings, I did kind of the same thing, except I did not get to take any pictures, I used pictures from the internet and made a mental collage of how the placement is going to be. The following are the pictures that I used to illustrate my work.

Then my next step was to start illustrating. I first illustrated the main subjects. This took me a really long time. I wanted to make sure I caught the essence of the artists wrk, where when you look up close, they are all basically just random shapes, which in the end make up the whole painting.

Here, I didn't make then so realistic, when you look closely, at Lily Kemp's work, you will notice that the eyes don't look realistic at all, they look almost odd.
Next, I moved on to the background.

Figure 1.8 - Illustrated background - 25/06/2021

In Lily Kemp's paintings you will notice that how the colours are used is the same as how she coloured her subjects.
After trying to place subjects in the background in the most appealing way possible, I had some results thought not quite sure about the placement of the subjects.

After giving some thought to Dr. Charles's feedback, I brought some changes to the subjects to bring more unity into the final artwork

Final Design Outcome

Figure 1.10 - Final Design Outcome - 29/06/2021

Rationale:
Firstly, I would like to analyse my work. This illustration is utterly and completely inspired by Lily Kemp. My inspiration for this is from her painting "My Reflection" in 2019. For my artwork I chose to do an illustration. It was a way in which I chose to test myself in my level of digital art. In this artwork you can firstly see that there are three subjects. My main goal was to emphasise on the three women especially the one in the red dress though without having too much contrast between the representation of the three. The colours that I used for the subjects and there dresses are completely inspired by my country's traditional dress and their colours, though I used the different shades of greens and reds that were represented in Lily kemps paintings. The brightness of the shaped of shadows and highlights are heavily emphasised throughout the whole painting, from the background the women which gives the illustration a balance. This also shows repetition in the form of women in traditional wear as well as the the way in which the shadows and highlights are presented throughout the illustration.

My purpose for my project was to demonstrate feminine representation, and what better place to do so than about my own country? I made sure to do a more ocean- beach themed background. When we think about Maldives obviously, the first thing that would come our minds are the amazing beaches with white sand clear blue sea and coconut palms. I wanted to make sure to represent that part of out country as well. By doing this I felt that it gave the artwork harmony and unity. Though harmony and unity played a huge role in the placement of the subject. The first few tries looked a bit tricky.

Our most traditional dress consists of the Libaas, more commonly red in colour, with an underskirt also known as Kandiki and a golden necklace known as Fattaru Bai. The women in the red dress  directly translates to Raiy Libaas placed at the very front though not in the middle. The next being the women who in the green and in the process of thatch making as known as Fangi vinunThough the main purpose if to represent fashion in a traditional sense, one of the reasons I chose to Illustrate the woman in the green is to show the process of thatch-making is a part of our culture among other things, though more common in the earlier days. And lastly, the subject in the middle, also in traditional wear, but not the most official, These were the kind of dresses women wore around the house, especially older women. It's also worth noting the colours and how they're utilised. The colours were heavily influenced by how I created the shape of the highlights and shadows, which had an even larger impact on the overall perception of my interpretation of Lily Kemp's work.

Reflection:
This project has been one of the more satisfying projects I have done. I am very happy with the end result. Especially because I got to represent my nation and our traditional wear. I learned a lot in the process as well. At this point you could say that I have mastered the pen tool. I tried my best to get the gist of Lily Kemp's paintings. I love everything this artist has to offer. Overtime as I read more and more about the artist, I have become more proud of the work that I have produced. I would not call this easy. In fact this took me quite a-lot of time to do. I love everything this artist has to offer.

Dr Charles Feedback
When I showed doctor Charles the result of the final work, he thought that there might be room for improvement in terms of the placement of the women in the illustration.
