 Information Design - Exercises

MIB

Week 1

Lecture:
Week one's lecture consisted of firstly introducing us to what information design is. After this we were given a brief on the module and what it entails and the details of the exercises. We were given to do our first exercise on quantify and visualise data. Then moved on to briefing on the FLIP 1 presentation, which is due the second week. During the practical session, were introduced to motion graphics and then briefed on our final project, which we started on the first week as well.

Exercise 1 - Quantify and Visualise Data

For this exercise we had to choose an object or select our own data and arrange them in a tasteful manner. It can be arranged according to its colour, shape flow size etc. For this I chose the only thing I could find around my house that I had enough of and can be arranged in that manner. I chose to do this exercise using cashew nuts.

Figure 1.3 - Arrange and Label

The reason why I chose to arrange in this manner is to show the flow of how the cashew nuts had broken down according to size and shape. And labeled each stage of it, according to what I observe visually.

Week 1 - Motion Graphics

Individual Tasks

For this week's Practical task we need to select 3 different motion graphics on our blog with Rationals and Inspirations.

Video 1 :- The link between manufacturing and business.

Rationale Video 1 - The reason why I think that this motion graphic video is good, is because of how it is able to easily communicate with their audience. The graphical elements of this video had really good composition as well.

Video 2 :- Rock and Roll - A very Brief History

Rationale Video 2 - To this date, I think that this is one of my favourite motion graphics video. This is because they are able to smoothly move from one to the other with the use of symbols. I think that the overall movement though this video was pretty seamless, and is able to keep the audience engaged well.

Video 3 :- Better Light - Better Life

Rationale Video 3 - The reason why I chose this video is because of how it tells a story with its graphics. I love the use of colour and how the overall ambience comes to life within the video. The idea is very well thought-out and the composition in my opinion is very well done. This video is able to communicate exactly what it is supposed to makes a really good promotional video.

FLIP 1 - Individual Task
For this task we had to pick one free online infographic tool and re-design one poorly constructed infographic poster through your own experimentation with the selected tool

I did some googling and i found this one post that I thought was very poorly designed. The poster looked very congested and confusing to read. So from the research I had done for types of infographic I figured the best way to go would be to find a line infographic template. For this exercise I used Canva. Because of how easy and convenient it is to use.

Figure 1.8 - Final Outcome
In this poster I did not include all of the points covered in the original poster. My goal was to keep it clean and able to read, understand and have an overall flow to the infographic. With the use of Canva I was able to find graphics that matched the design of the template. If I wanted to I could have changed the colors and brought some original changes to the template, but I decided to stick with the original design and lay because I felt like it already looked good by itself.

Week 2

Lecture:
On week 2, The fist thing was, we watched all the submissions for FLIP 1 presentation. After this we were briefed on our exercise 2 and Project 1. During the practical, we worked on learning Kinetic Typography, that is essential as our next group practical task is to create a lyric video for a song using Kinetic Typography. We were given an exercise to practice this as well by following a youtube video.

Exercise 2 - L.A.T.C.H

For this assignment I chose to base it on Pokemon, bur more specifically on the Kanto Starter Pokemon, their types and its forms of evolution.

I started this exercise by researching on what the Kanto map looks like. Then i moved on to illustrating. I used illustrator for this. Its not the most accurate but I tried to make the shape look as close to it as possible. I then added the little details to fill up the whole area. By adding trees, mountains, houses, etc.

After I was done with Kanto Region, I moved to finishing the rest of my infographic. I used Pokemons from https://www.pokemon.com/us/. Then added the final touches.

Week 3

Week 3 - Motion Graphic Chart

Individual Tasks

Motion Graphic Chart - For this exercise we had to create a motion graphic chart, where we were assigned each, a kind of chart. I had to do a line graph for the monthly covid-19 cases rate for ICE detainee and US populations.

Here is my final result of Line Chart for the Monthly COVID-19 case rate for ICE detainee and US populations
