Task 1 : Breaking Brand

LECTURES

Week 1 - Introduction
This lecture introduces us to the concept of brand corporate identity and how it is important in the world of graphic design because of its effective use of symbols and design in visual communication. This lecture demonstrated how a brand identity is created using symbols, starting with a mark and progressing to a complete identity, which is referred to as branding. Following that, this lecture discussed the projects and deadlines for this module, as well as the semester's timeline. Furthermore, we were advised to become more reliant on ourselves in order to effectively manage time and produce high-quality results.

Week 2 - Brand
The purpose of this lecture was to finally introduce us to the concept of branding. After introducing the history of the term, it was explained that branding entails not only owning the property and its products, but also owning your company's values, what it stands for, owning up to faults, and customer loyalty, among other things. Then we were shown various images and asked to describe how or what we associated them with. We then moved on to brand identity, which is distinct from brand image in that it occurs when all of the elements come together to create the right image for the consumer. This lecture also covered the various factors that must be considered in order to achieve branding, as well as the benefits of branding. As a designer, you must research the product, learn about your client's history, and comprehend the target market, among other things, in order for your brand to stand out in a competitive market. The lecture ended with an explanation of the virtuous circle, which results in a sustainable competitive advantage.

Week 3 - Types of Marks
Logo, monogram, heraldry, and trademark are the main types of marks discussed in this lecture. The first is a logo, which is often confused with the term trademark or incorrectly referred to as a symbol made up of text or images that identifies a company, service, product, or person. A logotype is centred around a company name or initials, while a logo mark is centred around a symbolic image or icon. A monogram is a 'symbol' or 'logo' created by combining two or more letters, which are usually the initials of an individual or company to be identified or recognised. Next is heraldry, is inclusive of many things. It is the design of armoury together with the study of ceremony, rank and pedigree. It represents symbols seals and flags that represent royalty, armies or empires that composite the visual elements of heraldic symbols that are Euro centric in nature. This was followed by different types or forms of the heraldic symbols may appear such as crest, coat of arms and insignia. Lastly, trademark, is a symbol  or word that is legally registered to represent a company or product. These marks represent quality, ability and skill level of the creator with its signified ownership. A trademark can also be used as a legal protection against intellectual property infringement.

RESEARCH

Week 1
On week 1, we got started with the project by deciding with in our group which globally known brand we were going to choose to breakdown. We decided on doing our project based on Disney. After this we divided the questions among everyone and started with the research bit.

PROCESS

Week 2
On week 2 our group mostly worked on the last bits of the research, making sure we got all the facts right and citing the sources. This is where, each of us started on the slides. To make the slides, each of us had to choose a theme that matched with the brand we chose, and since our theme was Disney, my idea was to include pictures of the evolution of Mickey mouse. I did this by using pictures of the cartoon from the day it came out first in the 1920's up until now.

REFLECTION

Experience
My experience working in our group for this task was very positive. We were able to easily communicate amongst ourselves about any occurrences or issues that arose. We were able to complete everything on time because the task was evenly distributed among the three of us. The topic we chose, The Walt Disney Company, was also very entertaining to all of us.

Observation
Overall, the main goal of this task for all of us was to conduct research on the brand of our choice, which differed from other tasks in that it was solely research based. The only design we had to do was on the slides, but I chose to do it in the most minimal way possible. I believe there are many other ways I could have gone about designing the slides, but I mostly wanted to focus on the research and information we were putting out on the slides.

Findings
In some ways, I found this task challenging because I was unfamiliar with some business aspects or terms used in the research. However, once I understood what those terms meant, the rest of my research went much more smoothly and quickly. Otherwise, This task caught my interest because I've always been a Disney fan, and it provided me with the opportunity to learn a lot more about the company.

This post talks about how The Walt Disney Company made so successful as a brand. It talks about a few key points that they think was behind the success of this brands. This included 1. Creating a story, meaning, that they mastered their ability to tell stories. 2. Knowing your audience, meaning, Disney uses nostalgia as a driving force to their audience. 3. Design the experience, meaning, that every aspect of the company has been carefully set and planned out and every single detail has been analysed.
