Experience
My Experience with typography is almost like a rollercoaster. I would say that coming in to this, I had no idea what Typography was. My first thought was it was just writing letters and learning about calligraphy. But then coming to understand how complex it was, it kind of made me a little bit conscious about the kind of work I put out. Sometimes I am able to perform well, where both me and the lecturers like the work that I do, but then again sometimes I feel like I am not able to produce the work to my best potential, which often leads to utter disappointment. I definitely have not mastered the art of typography, though I have learned a-lot. Now I just need to put what I learned in this class to motion. I think of this experience as a first step. I could only hope that in the future that I am able to pickup the skillset that goes into Typography.
Observations
I noticed that after a few weeks of taking Typography, I keep catching myself looking at the designs of random logos, even on small boxes, just random things and observing them by checking the kerning, tracking and how the letters are placed. This in the end was much benefited, as it did help me a-lot with Task 3(a) where we had to produce a typeface design. I am very proud of the work that I did for that task. At first I felt like this module put a-lot of pressure on me, to produce something that is considered good work in typography. I thought that feeling that way meant that I didn't enjoy this module. But as it turned out, I actually did quite enjoy it. There was pressure but it was the good kind that made me challenge myself.
Findings
I found that typography is the module that helped me the most in developing the skill when it came to illustrator and also the first time animating something. I have learned a-lot though the advice of the lecturers, reading and practicing. One thing I liked most about this module is that we do the work during class hours a-lot of the times. This kept me focused from start to finish, and also helped me get the feedback that I need from the lecture to make further improvements. I have found this challenging to be quite alluring as how how I felt at the begging of the module. One thing I would like to take away from this is to learn how to think critically about the work I produce. Hopefully I will get the hang of it in Advanced Typography.
